A Danish gas strategy is currently being prepared with a focus on how the Danish gas infrastructure can continue to be utilized commercially, including in the green transition.
The plan to prepare a gas strategy was first outlined in the Danish parliament’s energy agreement of 2018.
According to the political agreement, the strategy will look at the framework conditions for a competitive expansion with biogas and other green gases as well as the overall balances in the Danish gas sector, including investments and activities in the North Sea and possible scenarios for a long-term phasing out of natural gas.
The strategy will also look at the framework conditions for the integration of energy systems, including opportunities for converting and storing electricity as a gas fuel, for example as methane.
The gas strategy takes as its starting point the climate objectives and a large number of agreements entered into, including the Climate Agreement for Energy and Industry from 2020 and the North Sea Agreement.
The government’s work on the gas strategy began in 2019 with the preparation of stakeholder involve ment in the form of a “basecamp”, which was held in January 2020. Since then, work has been ongoing with several analyses.
According to the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Supply its work in 2021 will consist of an analysis and writing phase, which is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2021. In parallel, an extensive stakeholder involvement will be implemented.
Work continues until expected publication of the gas strategy during the second half of 2021.
WSCO will continue to monitor and report on gas and other energy matters in Denmark.
